The BlackBerry® 7270 smartphone gives facility-based employees a superior wireless email and data experience and Session Initiated Protocol (SIP)-based IP telephony. Operating on Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), the BlackBerry 7270 smartphone gives on-premises users wireless access to desktop phone functionality and a rich suite of applications, including email, browser and organizer.

Research In Motion (RIM) is demonstrating a new BlackBerry Wireless Handheld today at the Gartner ITXPO Symposium that operates on 802.11b networks and incorporates both voice and data capabilities. Expected to be commercialli available next year, the BlackBerry 7270 will be the first BlackBerry handheld to feature VoIP and WLAN support.According to RIM, the company has been testing functional prototypes internally and will begin external customer trials with select organizations starting next month. The company said its BlackBerry 7270 supports VoIP telephony which extends desktop phone functionality to a BlackBerry wireless handheld, utilizing SIP-based call control to deliver interoperability with IP PBX and traditional corporate telephony equipment.

The BlackBerry 7270 supports VoIP telephony that essentially extends desktop phone functionality to a BlackBerry wireless handheld allowing the user to place and receive calls on the go. It utilizes SIP-based call control to deliver standards-based interoperability with IP-PBX and traditional corporate telephony equipment.

The BlackBerry 7270 handheld conforms to the 802.11b WLAN standard and provides VoIP capabilities through the SIP standard. In order to enable seamless integration with WLAN and IP-PBX systems, RIM has worked with industry standard protocols and leading WLAN and IP-PBX vendors to allow product interoperability and certification. The BlackBerry 7270 also supports most WLAN authentication and encryption standards and includes client software for many leading enterprise VPN gateways.
