RIM and Rogers Wireless announced that the BlackBerry 8700r wireless handheld will be available November 29th in Canada. The BlackBerry 8700r is touted as an all-in-one device supporting e-mail, web and corporate data applications. This also happens to be the first device in Canada to support EDGE networks, so it’s a little landmark of something there. The BlackBerry appeals precisely to people who want a simple device — people who have seen too many Swiss Army Cellphones and asked the salesman, “Don’t you have one that makes phone calls?”
The BlackBerry 8700r supports a QVGA (320×240) LCD screen capable of 65k colors which automatically adjusts the brightness depending on the surrounding light. It features 64MB of flash memory as well as 16MB SRAM for applications. It’s good to know the 8700r sports Bluetooth and integrated speakerphone for handsfree operation. With quad-band support, the 8700r can work in more than 170 countries. Of course, you also have the usual QWERTY keyboard for convenient e-mail and web access.
The 8700r runs on a new, faster processor, Intel’s XA 901. It is also slimmer than the previous 7200 series, making it easier to hold — it’s like changing from a deck of poker cards to the smaller bridge cards. Its earpiece has developed a more pronounced ridge around it, which is oddly necessary — you can more easily align it with your ear; it is difficult to listen to the 7200 series devices if they’re even slightly out of line with the ear.A slimmer profile means less space for the keyboard, but RIM has redesigned the keys, making them no more awkward to type on with your thumbs than on previous models. Even better, the keys with the numbers on them are a different colour entirely, making it easier to find them when dialling.
