The Blackberry 8730e operated on Verizon Wireless’ Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) network. It was available to Verizon Wireless customers 5 days later. The Blackberry 9703e integrated advanced device hardware, software and network technologies with a powerful handset that comes complete with a full 35-key QWERTY keyboard. The Blackberry offers Verizon Wireless customers an exceptional user experience for sending emails, browsing the world wide web as well as other mobile data applications and combines it with premium mobile features that include dedicated phone keys, smart dialing, conference dialing, conference calling, speed dialing, call forwarding, built in speakerphone that can be used for conference calls and hands-free use and Bluetooth technology for use with headsets and car kits.

The 8703e offers a full QWERTY keyboard, which is backlit for ease of use. The keys are comfortable to use and well spaced. A track wheel is used for navigation. The 8703 e also provides a choice on the main screen between colorful and intuitive icons and simple, easily readable text menus. The phone uses an intelligent light sensing technology to automatically adjust both the screen and keyboard lighting for each of three levels of ambient light. Aside from the BrickBreaker game, the 8703e is devoid of superfluous features. You get no camera, no media player, and no expansion slot; instant messaging isn’t included, either. About the only fun thing you can do is assign MP3 ring tones to various contacts. If you long for a more entertaining BlackBerry, check out the Pearl instead.

The 8703e’s user interface (UI) might feel strange if you’re coming from a Windows Mobile or Palm-based handheld. But there are lots of neat touches to guide you. For example, the unit prominently displays your phone number, which is helpful if you’re using the BlackBerry for business e-mail and don’t have the number memorized. The UI conveniently shows you a graphic of which key you need to press next in order to complete a task. It also feels fast compared with that of Microsoft Windows Mobile and Palm-based smartphones.Data management is easy with the 8703e. BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, available to corporate customers, works seamlessly with a variety of popular business applications including Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange. Personal users can access many of the same applications through the BlackBerry Internet Service. Web browsing is simple and fast on the 8703e and the phone also functions easily as a modem, enabling access via laptop to the enhanced EV-DO wireless network. Internet speed depends on signal strength, and is not as fast as true broadband in any case, but this seems to be a function of existing cellular technology rather than a fault of the phone.
