It has been more than a year and a half since the first RIM BlackBerry Pearl launched, the device has changed little, at least visually. The design is still the same, and though we’ve always appreciated the SureType keyboard and the slim design, the OS needs a serious upgrade, and even the trackball isn’t as amusing as it once was. We liked having GPS on a Pearl, but the Verizon Wireless and Sprint BlackBerry Pearls both have navigation, with 3G networking to boot. Still, even though there is little to recommend AT&T’s BlackBerry Pearl 8110 over the others, it’s still a competent smartphone and not a bad choice, even though there are better choices around.Compared to the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 and 8120, the RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8110 boasts a very useful GPS feature. If you’re addicted to BlackBerry handsets and need a sat-nav, then it’s definitely worth having a look at this model — but don’t expect anything different in the design department compared to the original Pearl.
Aesthetically, you’ll be hard-pressed to pick the 8110 out of a Pearl design lineup. Colored in blue, black or pink, it’s identical to the original Pearl 8100, so business users looking for a slim phone won’t be in for any cosmetic shocks. The stylish Pearl 8110 comes with a built in RIM wireless modem which allows the user to gain quick access to the Internet from this highly capable business featured Smartphone. The BlackBerry Pearl 8110 comes with a wireless email service which allows the user to create, send, receive, reply & forward messages complete with email attachments. The email attachment feature allows the user to attach & send email with an attachment as well as enjoying receiving emails with all popular formats of email attachments. The user can enjoy other messaging services including text messaging, multimedia messaging & instant messaging which supports popular instant messaging applications like Yahoo, Google Talk & Messenger. The BlackBerry Pearl 8110 comes with a built in GPS which is available dependant on the user’s network service provider & the Smartphone supports BlackBerry Maps. A built in document t viewer allows the user to view documents in either Word, PowerPoint or Excel.
We tested it out using Telmap Navigator on Vodafone and TeleNav 5.1 on T-Mobile and found it picked up satellites quickly. We found having GPS to be a really useful feature, particularly when we were lost in town. The loudspeaker was loud enough to hear instructions clearly and, if you needed to, you could always plug your headphones straight into the 3.5mm headphone jack. In terms of other features, it’s similar to the BlackBerry 8120–minus Wi-Fi. Weaknesses It seems RIM is so pleased with the original BlackBerry Pearl 8100’s design that it’s rehashing it over and over again. Are BlackBerry users starting to get glassy-eyed with this “new” phone? The Pearl will play music and has a 3.5mm headset connector so you can use your favourite earphones. With 64MB of on board memory you can’t store a great many tunes inside the Pearl, but there is a microSD card slot on the left side and so it is easy to add more. There is a Web browser. There is the obligatory camera too, but it is a bit disappointing. It can shoot stills at resolutions up to 2 megapixels and video at 240 x 180 and 176 x 144. It has a self-portrait mirror and flash. It shoots images at reasonable quality as long as the subject is still, but if they are moving you get a bit of blurring.
