The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 brings Research In Motion’s Pearl line to Verizon for the first time. Like the Pearl devices available on other networks, the 8130 is a consumer oriented BlackBerry device with a small form factor and a hybrid SureType keyboard that puts two letters on each key. The Pearl will be attractive to those who want all the power of the BlackBerry platform but don’t want to carry around a bulky device. The Pearl 8130 is also available from Sprint and previous iterations are available from AT&T and T-Mobile. Verizon is offering the Pearl for $199.99 with a two-year contract. The 8130 is a small candybar phone, and when we say small we really mean it. Those familiar with BlackBerries who have not held a Pearl are almost always taken at just how small it really is. The device is so light and narrow that it fits very well into the hand. The phone is all plastic, and the Verizon variant is a bright sliver, bordering on white, with bright chrome sides.
As RIM has moved the BlackBerry lineup into the consumer mainstream they’ve made significant improvements to the multimedia features on the device. The Pearl 8130 sports a two megapixel stills camera, which is an upgrade over the original Pearl. The quality of the photos taken by the Pearl was only average, however; the images had a good amount of detail, but the colors were off, with some colors (particularly yellows) coming out pale and understurated. The Pearl 8130 also introduces video recording, a feature not previously seen on BlackBerries, but again the quality was not very good; while the videis it captures are fine for sending at MMS messages, they aren’t going to look good on a TV.
The RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8130 is noteworthy for more than just the fact that it’s the first CDMA Pearl. It’s also the first device from RIM to offer video-recording capabilities and the first Pearl to have built-in GPS, not to mention the EV-DO support and improved Web browser. But first things first: Let’s discuss the phone capabilities.Voice features on the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 include a speakerphone, voice dialing and commands, conference calling, text and multimedia messaging, and call-audio enhancement, which lets you boost the bass or treble. The address book is limited only by the available memory (64MB flash), and each entry can hold up to eight numbers, work and home addresses, e-mail and Web addresses, company information, and notes. For caller ID purposes, you can assign a photo to a contact as well as a group category–business or personal–or one of 45 polyphonic ringtones. The Pearl also supports MP3 and MIDI ringtones.Unlike the 3G-deprived GSM Pearls, the Pearl 8130 works on Verizon’s EV-DO network, bringing data speeds of about 300Kbps to 600Kbps, though they could potentially hit 2.4Mbps. This means you should enjoy a faster Web-surfing experience, and it should also be more enjoyable, thanks to the improved browser.
