The Blackberry 8730e operated on Verizon Wireless’ Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) network. It was available to Verizon Wireless customers 5 days later. The Blackberry 9703e integrated advanced device hardware, software and network technologies with a powerful handset that comes complete with a full 35-key QWERTY keyboard. The Blackberry offers Verizon Wireless customers an exceptional user experience for sending emails, browsing the world wide web as well as other mobile data applications and combines it with premium mobile features that include dedicated phone keys, smart dialing, conference dialing, conference calling, speed dialing, call forwarding, built in speakerphone that can be used for conference calls and hands-free use and Bluetooth technology for use with headsets and car kits.

The 8703e offers a full QWERTY keyboard, which is backlit for ease of use. The keys are comfortable to use and well spaced. A track wheel is used for navigation. The 8703 e also provides a choice on the main screen between colorful and intuitive icons and simple, easily readable text menus. The phone uses an intelligent light sensing technology to automatically adjust both the screen and keyboard lighting for each of three levels of ambient light. Aside from the BrickBreaker game, the 8703e is devoid of superfluous features. You get no camera, no media player, and no expansion slot; instant messaging isn’t included, either. About the only fun thing you can do is assign MP3 ring tones to various contacts. If you long for a more entertaining BlackBerry, check out the Pearl instead.

The 8703e’s user interface (UI) might feel strange if you’re coming from a Windows Mobile or Palm-based handheld. But there are lots of neat touches to guide you. For example, the unit prominently displays your phone number, which is helpful if you’re using the BlackBerry for business e-mail and don’t have the number memorized. The UI conveniently shows you a graphic of which key you need to press next in order to complete a task. It also feels fast compared with that of Microsoft Windows Mobile and Palm-based smartphones.Data management is easy with the 8703e. BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, available to corporate customers, works seamlessly with a variety of popular business applications including Lotus Domino and Microsoft Exchange. Personal users can access many of the same applications through the BlackBerry Internet Service. Web browsing is simple and fast on the 8703e and the phone also functions easily as a modem, enabling access via laptop to the enhanced EV-DO wireless network. Internet speed depends on signal strength, and is not as fast as true broadband in any case, but this seems to be a function of existing cellular technology rather than a fault of the phone.

RIM and Rogers Wireless announced that the BlackBerry 8700r wireless handheld will be available November 29th in Canada. The BlackBerry 8700r is touted as an all-in-one device supporting e-mail, web and corporate data applications. This also happens to be the first device in Canada to support EDGE networks, so it’s a little landmark of something there. The BlackBerry appeals precisely to people who want a simple device — people who have seen too many Swiss Army Cellphones and asked the salesman, “Don’t you have one that makes phone calls?”

The BlackBerry 8700r supports a QVGA (320×240) LCD screen capable of 65k colors which automatically adjusts the brightness depending on the surrounding light. It features 64MB of flash memory as well as 16MB SRAM for applications. It’s good to know the 8700r sports Bluetooth and integrated speakerphone for handsfree operation. With quad-band support, the 8700r can work in more than 170 countries. Of course, you also have the usual QWERTY keyboard for convenient e-mail and web access.

The 8700r runs on a new, faster processor, Intel’s XA 901. It is also slimmer than the previous 7200 series, making it easier to hold — it’s like changing from a deck of poker cards to the smaller bridge cards. Its earpiece has developed a more pronounced ridge around it, which is oddly necessary — you can more easily align it with your ear; it is difficult to listen to the 7200 series devices if they’re even slightly out of line with the ear.A slimmer profile means less space for the keyboard, but RIM has redesigned the keys, making them no more awkward to type on with your thumbs than on previous models. Even better, the keys with the numbers on them are a different colour entirely, making it easier to find them when dialling.

Need to stay connected while you’re on the go? Get the BlackBerry® 8700g smartphone. Email, phone, web browser and text messaging keep you in touch — virtually wherever you are. And the thin, lightweight design — with a full QWERTY keyboard — lets you do it all in style.

The BlackBerry 8700g, the latest addition to RIM’s 8700 series of PDA/phones, adds more of a consumer flavor to BlackBerry’s notoriously business-geared devices. To the BlackBerry’s already stellar messaging capabilities, it adds support for consumer instant messaging clients and even easier handling of personal e-mail accounts. The new BlackBerry 8700g from T-Mobile is available right now for a price of $299 with mail in rebate and instant savings, they are really $399 without. The contract required to keep your BlackBerry talking is just $30 per month and that includes EDGE GPRS in the package.

While we’re on the subject, the BlackBerry 8700g’s screen is gorgeous. It displays 65,000 hues with a 320×240-pixel resolution–a vast improvement over the BlackBerry 7290. Colors are vibrant, with sharp, clearly defined images and text. It’s great for navigating the intuitive menu or for viewing Web pages and images. The display also features a light-sensing technology that automatically adjusts for your environment, depending on whether you’re indoors, outdoors, or in the dark. We put it to the test, and we’re happy to report that the screen was always readable. You can also adjust the backlight’s brightness and time-out settings, as well as font size and type, all through the Options menu. A small LED above the screen flashes different colors to alert you to various messages: green for network activity, red for message notification, yellow for low battery, and blue for Bluetooth connectivity.

BlackBerry devices are known for their fantastic e-mail capabilities, and the 8700g is no exception. It features RIM’s push e-mail technology, which brings your messages directly to the handheld–you don’t have to check for them. It can accommodate up to ten e-mail accounts, and supports Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, IMAP, and POP3 e-mail accounts. The 8700g expands the push e-mail technology to include Yahoo Web mail accounts, but doesn’t work with Hotmail or Gmail. A new feature called “Set up Internet E-mail” makes it a snap to add e-mail accounts; you simply enter your e-mail address and account password, and within 20 minutes your messages are delivered to your handheld. Messages sent from the handheld are now reflected in the “sent” folder of your desktop e-mail client as well.

Need to stay connected while you’re on the go? Get the BlackBerry® 8700c smartphone. Email, phone, web browser and text messaging keep you in touch — wherever you are. And the thin, lightweight design — with a full QWERTY keyboard — lets you do it all in style.

Size: 4.3 x 2.7 x 0.77 inches (LxWxD)
Weight: 4.7 oz.
Display: Font size (user selectable), Color display, Backlighting, Light sensing screen

The RIM BlackBerry 8700c offers best-of-breed design, combining everything we love about the traditional BlackBerry form factor with the best aspects of the newer BlackBerry 7100 series. From the 7100 series, the 8700c takes a similar compact (4.3 by 2.7 by 0.7 inches; 4.7 ounces) and sleek look that won’t weigh you down or cramp your style. The blue-gray and black coloring is attractive, and more important, the smart phone feels good in your hands–solid and easy to use one-handed. On the 7100 series, we weren’t fond of the modified keyboard, which is why we’re thrilled that RIM brought back the full QWERTY keyboard by making the 8700c slightly wider than both the BlackBerry 7100g and the BlackBerry 7100t. Although the 35 buttons are fairly well spaced, those with larger digits may have some problems, especially if they’re used to the roomier keyboards of past BlackBerrys. That said, the squarish and tactile keys are raised above the phone’s surface for easy typing and provide a satisfying click once pressed.

The 8700c does not have a touch screen; the familiar BlackBerry scroll-wheel-and-back-button interface remains. The device has been enhanced, though, by the introduction of a new programmable button on the left side, along with dedicated phone pickup and hang-up buttons. As an e-mail device, the BlackBerry still reigns supreme. Push e-mail is as smooth as ever, and the new EDGE modem (more than twice as fast as previous GPRS models) makes text e-mails seem to arrive instantaneously. RIM told us the Version 4.03 of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the latest release, will support viewing of Microsoft PowerPoint attachments, though we did not test this for ourselves.

The Class 10 EDGE modem makes Web browsing faster than on previous BlackBerrys. The built-in BlackBerry browser still mangles tables and chokes on some JavaScript (forget about booking flights through Expedia or Travelocity) but most pages, including those of CNN and PCMag.com, are readable. We did see that Microsoft Excel attachments now show in a spreadsheet format rather than as plain text. You can also zoom in on JPEG attachments, viewing sections of high-resolution pictures at full quality. The only thing the 8700c is missing is BlackBerry’s new integration with Yahoo! Mail, which for the moment is available on T-Mobile 7105 models only. If your company happens to be running Version 4.03 of the Blackberry Enterprise Server JPEG attachments will now appear inline in the middle of messages (this feature has not yet appeared on Internet-based Cingular accounts though).
