Sprint together with Nextel has added the BlackBerry 7130e to its latest mobile lineup. The new BlackBerry sports the companies recent change to black and silver as a style to replace the perhaps dated black and blue plain plastic cases that adorned the older familiar Blackberries that we grew to like so much, I know we liked them because we bought them in droves; over four million in service worldwide.In addition to new overalls the 7130e boasts access to Sprint’s (not Nextel really) CDMA powered EV-DO data network; what does that mean? Access to downloads at speeds of over 700Kbps; that’s broadband territory… on a phone… but what’s better than that? Sprint will happily let you use that with your laptop as long as you get their USB connecting cable (no Bluetooth) and that’s rather nice.

The device comes with 64mb of flash memory and 16MB of SRAM. You can store countless emails on the BlackBerry, which is very convenient for IT departments as well as corporate. The 7130e does NOT support TXT or PIX messaging, which to most of your BlackBerry users is not a huge deal. Hands down the BlackBerry 7130e is a GREAT device and I would recommend it to any one that does not have the money for the Pearl  The 7130e can do all the standard communication options, including SMS and e-mail, and yes, that includes always-on push e-mail. It also comes equipped with RIM’s proprietary BlackBerry Instant Messenger, which lets you contact other BlackBerry users either from your portable device or your home computer, when linked up to it.

The 7130e, in addition to throwing in the cookie-cutter BlackBerry features, also has some great productivity abilities that really augment what the BlackBerry name is all about. First let’s take a look at some of the standard options. Included are a calendar, to-do-list, and memo pad, which brings up an important point – the text entry. The interface is a little bit different than most phones. It’s a QWERTY keyboard, but there are two letters on each key, so it feels like typing on a regular phone, but without the alphabetical placement of letters. It takes some getting used to, but it works out alright, especially because the predictive text works a lot better when you don’t have three possible letters for each keystroke.

The first thing that I noticed about the 7130g is that it looks good. Whereas previous BlackBerry handsets looked pretty dull and work-like, it looks like RIM considered design as well as functionality with the 7130g. Finished in matt black and silver, the 7130g looks pretty sleek and stylish – OK, it’s not going to win any beauty contests when compared to a Motorola V3 RAZR or a Nokia 8800, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction from RIM.

Sprint Nextel is helping itself to another slice of BlackBerry pie with the addition of RIM’s BlackBerry 7100i. The first of the 7100 series to make its debut on Nextel’s iDEN network, the 7100i’s design and feature set is similar to that of its siblings; it has a slim form factor, a great display, and a quasi-QWERTY keyboard with SureType technology. Yet, it also offers some new tricks–most notably support for Nextel’s walkie-talkie services–that when coupled with the BlackBerry’s push e-mail technology makes the 7100i a great device for on-the-go professionals. Plus, with a QWERTY keyboard, the 7100i is easier to use than the Nextel i930 by Motorola. Finally, at $199.99 after rebates, the BlackBerry 7100i is a good deal.

Measuring 119 x 59 x 21 mm and weighing 120 g, the BlackBerry 7100i is much easier to carry than the blue boxy BlackBerry of the past. Resembling more of a standard handheld, the angled lines and sleek looks are a definite improvement.Featuring a large 240 x 260 px screen, the 7100i is capable of displaying 65K colors. Hoping to attract the more casual user, RIM launched the BlackBerry 7100t a few months ago; with a new streamline design fit for the 21st century. At the time, Cingular consumers lusted after T-Mobile’s BlackBerry 7100t, but with the launch of the new BlackBerry 7100g, Cingular users are able to share in improved designs.The BlackBerry 7100g offers a fully functional cell phone with many added features all wrapped up in a chic and sleek form. Users can take advantage of all of the benefits presented by this practical unit. The unit fits comfortably in hand and offers quick and easy access to information, contacts and entertainment.

The RIM BlackBerry 7100g’s 2.1-inch, 65,000-color-plus screen is easy on the eyes with plenty of detail, thanks to its 240×260-pixel resolution. You can change the font size and style, as well as switch on antialiasing to smooth the rough edges of characters on the screen, but we disliked the fact that the 7100g’s display goes completely dark when the backlighting turns off. In standby mode, the main screen shows signal strength, battery life, the time, the date, caller ID info, and a mail icon that notifies you of unread messages. Unlike the nice-looking, icon-driven menu of the 7100t, the 7100g’s main menu appears only in list mode, which is unfortunate but not a deal breaker.

The RIM BlackBerry 7100g comes with a well-balanced meal of phone basics. The phone book handles as many entries as will fit in its 32MB of onboard RAM (the SIM card can hold an additional 250 contacts), and there’s room in each entry for eight numbers, home and work addresses, Web pages, and more. You also get a speakerphone, which you can engage only once you’re on a call; a calendar; task and to-do lists; a memo pad; a WAP wireless Web browser; an alarm; and a calculator. Some unexpected extras include the ability to search the 7100g’s messages, calendar, address book, memo pad, and tasks, either individually or all at once; there’s also a detailed help section. Unfortunately, the Bluetooth-enabled phone only supports wireless headsets, so if you’re looking for Bluetooth file transfers or syncing, you’re out of luck.
